When undertaking any closet organization it is good to start small.  Some sources will tell you to pull everything out and start fresh, but I think it is better to tackle small sections at a time.  This allows you to do it over multiple days and not rush through it.

Over time, we will conquer an entire closet, but today we are going to start with SHOES!

You will need to determine the best shoe organization option(s) for you by the size and layout of the closet you currently have.

I put all my heels and wedges on actual shelves, place my flats in an over-the-door hanger, and line my boots up on a shelf up top.

1. Shelves without boxes

This is by far the most popular way to organize shoes, but it is not always the most logical as it is sometimes more expensive and requires more space.

2. Shoe Cubbies

Shoe cubbies take up more space than shelves, but they sure do look nice all evenly spaced.

3. Over-the-Door Hangers

I prefer over the door hangers that are cloth pockets so the bottoms of my shoes will not rub any dirt on my dresses.  They also don’t fall off the hooks like the metal ones do if you close your door too fast. I also use the over-the-door storage for my flats, so pockets make more sense for me.

4. Boxes on shelves

When I was in high school I used to organize my shoes in clear plastic boxes with pictures on the outside of each box.  I soon realized I didn’t like this method because some shoes wouldn’t fit in the standard size shoebox, so I would end up with different size boxes that were not all clear or organized the same.

This is the perfect option for the extra nice pairs of shoes you want to keep in mint condition.

If you decide try this method I would not stack more than 2 rows of boxes on top of each other as they will be hard to take down to try on.

5. Racks

6. Under bed storage

This is perfect if you are very limited on closet space, or for storing the shoes that are not currently in season.

7. Bucket Storage

This is perfect for kids that have multiple pairs of tennis shoes or athletic shoes.  You can keep a deodorizer in the bucket and place shoes directly in there. Plus this allows any dirt that is accumulated to knock off in the bucket and not fall off a shelve onto your clean clothes.

Overall you want to pick organization options that work for you.   The reason you organize is so you can have a system that makes it easy for you to keep clean.  Choose the option(s) that work best for you.
